Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most fascinating places in France and it has a rich history. It is a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its incredible combination of natural and cultural elements. Considered one of the most important tributes to early Christian civilization, Mont Saint-Michel has many legends associated with it.
My favourite story associated with the mountain is that of the Devil and the Archangel Michel. The Devil and the Archangel used to share the island - the Archangel lived on the rocky side and the Devil occupied the part of the island that brought a bountiful harvest each year. The archangel offered the devil to work his land. The lazy devil agreed. Of course, the harvest that year was full of carrots, turnips, onions, and salsifies. The Devil was furious, so the Archangel offered him everything that grows in the ground for the next harvest. The next harvest consisted of wheat, barley, linseed, and colza; things that grow "on the ground". The Devil took back all his lands in anger. St Michel then devised a new plan to claim the Devil's lands - he invited the Devil to dinner, got him drunk, then took him to the top of a cliff and kicked him in the behind to another part of Normandy (in France).
I create all my illustrations through Procreate. This particular one took me two hours to create.
